  • Oven Mits
  • Heavy-duty Aluminum Foil

What’s The Best Ham For This Recipe?

There are a few reasons I like to use a bone-in ham instead of a boneless ham for this recipe:

  • The bone helps keep the ham tender and juicy. I also use a bone-in ham for my Brown Sugar Mustard Baked Ham.
  • A spiral cut ham with the bone in makes serving easy.
  • I save the bone and any leftover ham for Slow Cooker Ham, White Bean Soup, or Ham And Cheese Strata casserole.

How Do You Make A Honey Baked Ham?

This show-stopper recipe is uncomplicated and relatively simple to make.

  1. Heat the oven and move the oven rack to the lower third of the oven. Prep the roasting dish by lining it with aluminum foil. Take the ham out of the packaging and toss out the glaze packet. Place the ham and water in the roasting dish. Stir the melted butter, honey, and Dijon mustard together and drizzle over the ham and between the slices.
  2. Flip the ham to cut side down in the roasting pan and cover with foil. Bake for 13 minutes per pound, or until a meat thermometer reads 140 degrees when inserted into the thickest part of the ham.
  3. Make the sugar coating by mixing the sugar and spices. Remove the foil from the ham and turn it on its side. Sprinkle half of the sugar mixture over the ham. Set the oven to broil and place in ham in the oven until the sugar has caramelized.
  4. Add the remaining sugar mixture and 3 to 4 tablespoons of the ham juices from the pan to a small saucepan. Bring to a boil and cook until thick. Brush or pour the glaze over the ham. Place back under the broiler for 1 to 2 minutes until the edges are crispy, and the glaze is a dark golden brown.
  5. Remove from the oven and let the ham rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Helpful Tips

  • Add a ¼ teaspoon of ground cloves and allspice to add more warm spice flavor.
  • If you are unsure how to use a broiler, you can use a hand-held blow torch to caramelize the sugar coating and the glaze on the ham.
  • Spiral hams make serving easy. After removing the slices, use a sharp knife to cut any other ham chucks off the bone to use in soups, salads, and casseroles.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
  • Leftover ham can be stored in the freezer in a freezer-safe container or bag for up to three months.

I’m anxious to try this but I’m not understanding the instructions ie why place ham on side to apply the sugar mixture? Is it supposed to go into the slices? I assume you apply to both sides so I’m wondering why not drizzle it over the top, broil, apply the thickened sugar sauce, and broil again?
Sorry if I’m making this too difficult 🙄
