Want to serve up an interesting and different flavor combo this year? Try my paleo blueberry pie recipe! Or is it paleo chocolate pie?! It’s BOTH, and it’s a match made in heaven. My healthy blueberry pie is made with a nutty crust (paleo pie crust FTW!), and plenty of dark chocolate and blueberries.

Berries and chocolate are one of those flavor combinations that just work so well together. While it’s usually strawberries or cherries that get all of the chocolate love, this time blueberries are taking over.

This fresh blueberry pie has just the right amount of sweetness – not cloyingly sweet, but enough to bring out the chocolate and berry flavors. It’s amazing served with a scoop of coconut vanilla ice cream.

And when the pie chills, you have chocolate chunks running throughout. Served cold or warm, you can’t go wrong.

How To Make Blueberry Pie

Chocolate blueberry pie has been a staple for us for years now, and once you give it a try, I think you’ll be adding it into your baking rotation as well.

Here are the steps to make easy blueberry pie:

  • Make the crust. Mix together the almond flour, tapioca flour, coconut flour, coconut sugar, salt, and frozen ghee. Here are the full instructions for paleo pie crust.
  • Mix in eggs, vinegar, and vanilla. Using a mixer (or by hand), mix together until a dough forms. Form into 2 dough balls and refrigerate.
  • Make the blueberry filling. Mix blueberries, coconut sugar, and lemon in a bowl. Allow the mixture to sit while the dough cools.

  • Roll out one dough ball to form the bottom crust. Carefully place the crust into the pie dish.

  • Drain liquid off of blueberries. Add blueberries and pieces of dark chocolate to the pie crust.

  • Roll out the second dough ball. Place top crust on the pie pan and trim edges and pinch together.

TIP: Always cut slits in the top of the pie crust! This helps the steam escape during baking, plus they let you see when the filling is bubbling.

  • Bake until the top crust golden and the filling is bubbly, and then serve!

How Do You Make Paleo Pie Crust Turn Out?

Paleo pie crusts can be a little difficult to work with! But, I do have a few tips, though, to set you up for success:

  1. FREEZE YOUR GHEE OR LARD. Let me say that again, freeze your fat! This helps the dough stick together tremendously. I simply plop the ghee in the freezer the night before and then use a grater to get tiny little pieces all throughout the dough.
  2. Be sure to chill the dough for at least 30 minutes or up to an hour. Again, this helps the ghee set up from the melting it endured by being mixed into the dough.
  3. Roll it out between 2 sheets of parchment paper.
  4. Transfer to the pie pan using the parchment to lift andgently flip it into the pan.

If you follow those four steps, you’ll have a gorgeous pie crust. Plus, once it’s cooked, it holds up really well.

How Many Slices Are In A Pie?

The number of slices in a pie varies depending on the size of the pie pan and really, how you want to cut it.

For my paleo blueberry pie, I recommend cutting it into 8-12 pieces, depending on how much portion control you want!

Why Is My Pie Too Runny?

When you are making this chocolate pie recipe, it’s important to drain any liquid off the blueberries or the pie filling will be runny, and the crust soggy.

Can I Add Other Fruit To This Healthy Blueberry Pie?

Of course, you can add other fruits into this paleo chocolate pie. Just be sure to keep the same volume of 5 cups. Here are some ideas that you can try:

  • Strawberries – We already know that strawberries go well with blueberries and chocolate! Strawberries will add another hint of sweetness and pink color.
  • Cherries – Cherries are a natural match for chocolate, and will add an amazing pop of texture to the pie.
  • Raspberries – This blueberry chocolate pie always has room for some lovely fresh raspberries!

IMPORTANT TIP: If you use berries that hold a lot of water, you may want to simmer the filling first to reduce it.

Can I Use Frozen Blueberries For This Paleo Blueberry Pie?

I prefer the flavor and texture of fresh blueberries for this paleo blueberry pie. However, you can certainly use frozen blueberries if you like.

How Do You Store Paleo Chocolate Pie?

Store this paleo chocolate pie in the refrigerator. Keep it covered with a plastic wrap. The healthy blueberry pie will last around 3-4 days in the fridge.

If you prefer the paleo blueberry pie to be warm, you can toss it in the microwave for 20 seconds or so, or the oven for a few minutes. Just enough to take the chill out of it.

Can I Freeze Healthy Blueberry Pie?

Yes, you can freeze this healthy blueberry pie. Just wrap it up tightly and toss it in the freezer for 2-3 months. To defrost, place it in the refrigerator until it’s thawed.

Instructions

More TIPS about this paleo recipe in the post above!

  1. Make the paleo pie crust according to the instructions here (multiply ingredients by 1.5x), but don't bake. Form the dough into a ball and chill in the fridge while you do the steps for the filling.

  2. In a large bowl, combine the blueberries, coconut sugar, and lemon. Mash the blueberries with a fork to get their juices flowing. You want most of them whole so don't go overboard with this. Also, if you're using frozen blueberries you probably don't need to do this. Let sit for 30-60 minutes while the paleo pie crust dough is chilling.

  3. Preheat oven to 350° F. Lightly grease a 9-inch pie pan.

  4. Divide the dough into pieces, using 2/3 for the bottom crust and 1/3 for the top crust. Roll out the bottom piece of dough and place carefully into the pie pan.

  5. Check the blueberries to see how much liquid they have released. If it's more than 1/2 cup, remove some of the liquid. Mix in the chopped dark chocolate and transfer the mix to the pie pan.

  6. Roll out the top piece of dough and place on the pie. Trim off the crust that's hanging over the edges. Pinch the edges together.

  7. Transfer the paleo blueberry pie to the oven and bake for 1 hour. If the edges start to get too brown, wrap them in aluminum foil.

  8. Let the pie cool for 15-20 minutes before serving.
